The Museum of Fine Arts offers a prestigious collection to visitors: nearly 230 works from the Renaissance to Art Deco and Impressionism. The museum's collection was built up in 1794 from revolutionary seizures. It then became richer over the centuries.
Let's start the tour on the first floor.
The Monthelon room presents the major trends of the 16th century: religious paintings with a polyptych, from 1520, Life and Passion of Jesus Christ, attributed to an anonymous Flemish. The Diancourt room evokes the Age of Enlightenment with Neoclassicism, then the very Rococo decorative arts or the work of François Boucher, L'Odalisque, evokes without difficulty his penchant for libertinage. The place of landscape in the 19th century is important with these urban or rural representations, from Claude Monet to Camille Pissarro (Gauguin's master). Let us not forget Orientalism with Eugène Fromentin or Etienne Dinet. There is also the Romantic period with Eugène Delacroix and Ary Scheffer whose lively expressions cause a disturbing impression.
The Jamot Room, space of modernity!
The artists of Pont-aven, the Nabis but also the Synthétisme are there with Gauguin, Maurice Denis, Paul Sérusier who expose their aplats of colours surrounded by Prussian blue. Compositions where perspective is truncated, and these tonalities coming from the imagination of these artists with a fiery touch remind us of Japanese prints. Fauvism arrives just after followed by the Cubists. The Surrealists are also in the spotlight with the portraits of Sima or the Abstraction in the Kasparek room with the works of Helena Vieira da Silva. The stained glass window occupies an important place in the decorative arts collection of the Museum of Fine Arts. And on the ground floor, you will find magnificent Art Nouveau furniture in Art Deco style.
