Discovery of the Porte de Mars in Reims
Walk in the footsteps of your ancestors during your stay in Reims
Roman heritage in the north of France
If we go back in time, the city of Reims belonged to the Rèmes. During his conquest of Gaul, Julius Caesar decided to pay tribute to this Gallic people who were one of the only ones not to oppose the Emperor.
He chose to make Durocortorum (Roman name) the capital of Belgian Gaul. To do this, he transformed the city into the largest in Roman Gaul.
He erected the Mars Gate and three other monumental arches to show his power to the world. Only the first one withstood the test of time.
The Mars Gate in plain sight
Today, all travellers passing through Reims can admire this period building. At 12 metres high and almost 32 metres long, it is impossible to walk by without seeing it!
The Porte de Mars has 3 arches. The two side arches allowed pedestrians to enter the city. The central arch was reserved for the passage of carts.
Take a closer look at this last mentioned arch. You will notice sculptures that show a calendar of agricultural activities of the time, such as the harvest. A she-wolf is also hidden under this central archway.
Romulus and Remus, the legendary founder of Reims, can also be recognised.
